Host # 3 – Kevin Loughlin

Kevin

Kevin Loughlin has been hooked on birds and photography since the early age of six. After a life changing vacation to Belize in 1993, Kevin quit his job and started Wildside Nature Tours, now with trips on every continent. Kevin’s photos have been seen in many magazines such as Audubon and WildBird, as well as many photographic  and natural history books.

Kevin and one of his guides Edison Buenano, were in an adjacent booth at the Florida Birding & Photofest. While we spent most of our time in our respective booths, they agreed to carry the traveling trinovids afield on two consecutive mornings before vending hours began.

On Thursday night, the radar showed amazing concentrations of migrating birds, so we all fell asleep with visions of warblers dancing in our heads. The good news was the birds were flying over on ideal winds for migration, the bad news is the birds flew over and there was no sign of them the following AM.  Kevin & Edison found three times the number of warblers in the woods than I did birding separately. I saw exactly one! ;)

On Saturday morning, heavy rains and cool temps dominated. When I saw Kevin & Edison at the vendor area I wryly asked, “did you see much?” Edison, who guides throughout Central & South America quickly quipped, “It would be a good day for an Umbrellabird maybe!”

Happily, I will see these two guys again in a couple weeks at the Biggest Week in American Birding in Ohio. I look forward to it.
