Hanging Around with Birding Legends!

Birders in the know invariably find their way to where the birds are. So with countless migrant warblers funneling through Magee Marsh in Ohio, it should come as no surprise that many keen birders can be found here as well. By keeping a sharp eye out you can pick out some very recognizable bird folk joining the fray here, not to mention a warbler or two.

One of these birding giants that we ran into during the Biggest Week was Victor Emanuel, founder of Victor Emanuel Nature Tours! VENT is one of the earliest bird tour companies in the US, (and one of the largest bird tour companies in operation today) with roots back to the American birding renaissance in the 1970′s. Victor has guided countless tour participants on every continent, every year since, and his infectious enthusiasm for the resource is as obvious today as the day he began.

Despite the incredible list of personal accomplishments, great tours led, remarkable destinations, and a reputation for unsurpassed attention to creature comforts, there is one thing about Victor Emanuel that we here at Leica admire more than all the rest and staunchly support to this day. Victor founded the very first young birder camps in the US, way back in 1986 and still offers these today! In the time since, countless young birders have been able to join world class birding mentors at these camps and many have moved on to become leaders in the birding community today. Leica recognizes this mentoring as one of the MOST important things we can do to insure the integrity of this grand birding community and has supported the continuing efforts by VENT (and others since that we will be highlighting soon)! It’s a cause that every birder can easily support.
