Running with the big dogs!

A handful of Travis’s most recent additions to his big year attempt include: Rustic Bunting, Little Bunting, Whooper Swan, Whiskered Auklet, Brambling, an as of yet unaccepted Eurasian Sparrowhawk, and Dusky Thrush.Does this list sound a little familiar to you?!?…

If so it may be because Neil Hayward of The Accidental Big Year has many of those same birds as his most recent additions! This is no coincidence, though. It seems Neil has realized something we’ve known all along. That the Traveling Trinovid is more than a precision piece of optics, but old Travis is lucky as well. So Neil has wanted Travis along on some of his recent chases as he attempts to break the ABA area Big Year record set by Sandy Komito in 1998 (the inspiration for the Big Year book and movie respectively).

Accidental Big Year

At present, Neil is tied with Sandy’s record with a bit of year to go, so you can watch the whole event unfold on Neil’s awesome blog (linked above) if you aren’t following along already. Happily, digital photography advancements have made it so that Neil’s big year attempt is considerably better documented than Sandy’s year making it easy for arm chair birders from across the country to vicariously enjoy the ride!
