Birding with the Celebs!

Kenn & Kim Kaufman

Kenn & Kim Kaufman

As I said previously, lots of birders are present during the Biggest Week in American Birding and many of these folks are quite noteworthy. Particularly among the amazing talent pool of guides and speakers present. On the morning of Friday May 10th, the Traveling Trinovid joined the “Celebrity Bird Walk” led by Kenn & Kim Kaufman and co-led by Don & Lillian Stokes. Kim Kaufman is Director at Black Swamp Birdi Observatory, and one of the organizers of the Biggest Week. Despite her many claims to fame, our favorite is the unique & highly successful model she developed for the Ohio Young Birder Club which has since been emulated all across the country. Her commitment to youth birding is unmatched, and it was a great honor to have her shoulder the burden of carrying “Travis” on this walk. Along with her husband Kenn, she co-authors a very popular birding & conservation blog, Birding with Kenn & Kimberly.

Kenn Kaufman is author of numerous books and field guides including the popular Kaufman field guide series. Kenn took photo guides to a whole new level when he took numerous images of birds at different angles, cut these out (digitally) and placed these all on a single page in a standard field guide format on a white page shown together. This new approach (Field Guide to Birds of North America) was received very well in the community. However, we really love the fact that Kenn put up his own money to reproduce this guide in a spanish language version! This made birding far more accessible to the Spanish speaking community here in the US for the first time. Well played Kenn!

Don & Lillian Stokes

Of course, this was only half of the talent pool co-leading this trip. Donald & Lillian Stokes, of course, have their own series of long running field guides, and they have an extremely popular blog as well. We remember the popular birding series that the Stokes hosted in the late 1990′s as well!

With all of this talent present, the many participants of this field trip had an amazing pool to draw inspiration from. In the image above, one of the youngest birders in the group stands beside Kenn & Lillian listening and learning. Undoubtedly, she’s learning how to be a major contributor in birding’s future. The editorial staff from Birds & Blooms were on this walk as well. Maybe Travis’ image will appear in print, who knows?!?…

If you want to see the great number and variety of birds these folks saw with our Traveling Trinovid see the eBird checklist from the Magee Marsh boardwalk & East Beach.
